ABOUT
Adrian Bermeo [b.1989] is a Latinx artist born and bred in New York City. With influences from his formative experiences in graffiti, Bermeo’s work is grounded in a raw, intuitive approach to mark-making that is deeply informed by his upbringing and cultural exchanges as a child coming of age in Jackson Heights, Queens, to Puerto Rican and Ecuadorian parents.
Through gestural paintings of tactile qualities, Bermeo's abstractions examine many social dynamics bound by identity, belonging, and the applications of ancestral knowledge and spiritual connections. In attempts to conceptualize and understand certain relationships and outcomes through character, form, and color, dialogues sparked by such themes act as tools of introspection and discovery; questioning human nature and its conditions for survival.
Bermeo has studied at Liga De Arte, San Juan, Puerto Rico, SVA and Hunter College, NY, NY, and has exhibited with varied galleries in New York City. As a fellow teaching artist and curator, Bermeo has collaborated with galleries, community organizations, and institutions such as Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning and MoMA. His curatorial work has been featured in Hyperallergic, with his paintings acquired internationally by private collectors.
